My death will be delicious.
Anyway, enough about me. Several sporting news outlets have reported that Jason Smith (LT here at Baylor) will be going first in this year's NFL Draft. All I have is one word for that: AWESOME. Quick question, how many #1 picks have come from the Big 12 since its inception in 1996? ZERO. That's right, the big zero. Not even that hippie Ricky Williams from UT went #1 after winning the Heisman and neither did that backwards hick Jason White from OU (granted, he seemed to get more injured than your 90 year old grandma).
"I'm old."
Anyway, back to Jason Smith (or J-Smooth as his closest friends call him) being awesome. The guys over at profootballtalk.com have reported him going #1 although they admit they would rather see the Lions negotiate for other players as well - http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/03/22/lions-already-have-settled-on-smith/ - Frankly, I could care less if the Lions negotiated with other players as long as J-Smooth went #1. Call me biased, but it's about damn time I can yell out "SIC 'EM BEARS!" after the first pick is announced ('cause let's face it, that hasn't worked the past... oh... 200 years or so). Personally, I wouldn't take Stafford with the first pick anyway. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a good QB, but I firmly believe in the power of the trenches. Build up the line and then add the pieces after that. If you're one of those people who isn't sold on J-Smooth and his talent alone then look no further than this recent ESPN article chronicling his life story and expectations in college - http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft09/news/story?id=4012959 - He's truly a remarkable guy and makes me proud to say I go to Baylor.
J-Smooth. The J stands for JUSTICE.
On to other Baylor related news, our men's basketball team beat Auburn last night (remind me again, why do they have an eagle named Tiger?) 74-72 and advanced to the NIT Final Four next week in New York. Not a bad way to end the season (or your college career) at the MSG. Although it's definitely disappointing that we didn't make it to the NCAA tourney, I can't really complain. Kim Mulkey took the Lady Bears to the WNIT before winning the NCAA, so I'm hoping that I've already seen this movie before. Speaking of the Lady Bears, they pulled one out against South Dakota State 60-58 last night (in the last seconds) in the second round of the women's tourney to advance to the Sweet 16 for the 4th time in 6 years. Not too bad. I must admit, whenever I watch the Lady Bears play I get the feeling that they're gonna win based on sheer will alone, but I know that doesn't always happen. Hopefully, we won't get down too early against Louisiville in our next game and play with the lead for once in this tourney.
Madison Square Garden? More like Madison BEAR Garden.
Anyway, I know this post was mainly about the recent things here at Baylor, but I don't care. I'll update later with topics from around the nation.
